Chapter Four

Dr. Stone drove to his ex-wife’s house. It was once his home too, until another man claimed it. He sat outside, gazing at her car from afar. Ten years ago, they purchased that Toyota Prius. He could still see her beaming face upon getting it. Her voice still echoed through his ears, how her purchase would save the world from global warming. With the current 50 degree August cold front, he assumed she must’ve singlehandedly accomplished that.

At that moment, his curvy blond ex-wife appeared. Joshua Stone dipped lower, praying she wouldn’t notice him. He considered starting the ignition and speeding off, soon realizing he didn’t have to. The ex stared directly at his car. However, she didn’t even notice him. She moved on to the mailbox, doing her daily duty.

We’re officially strangers, he thought, feeling a stabbing pain in his heart. He’d stopped stalking her for an entire year. It was a big difference from his daily spying during the initial divorce. Back then, he just needed to see her, that she was OK. He’d always hoped she’d see his car, reversing her mistake. It never happened.

Though something brought him back to his ex-wife. Studying her body and face, it occurred to him, She looks just like Lori Hale. But why do I need to see her again? Why do I feel as strongly for a woman I barely know...as I do for one I loved? I can’t fall in love with my patient...I just can’t! My job is to fix her marriage and leave her alone. My job is to keep couples together, not break them up. Those feelings end now!

He went to start the car, as a sickly sight filled his eyes. The other man joined her with a kiss, embracing her in a loving hug. A twinge of angry sickness filled Joshua Stone.

He knew the cheater’s face well. Feelings of past nostalgia turned to rage. Joshua turned the keys, putting the car in drive. Heading right for the couple, he jammed the gas. He screamed, “Die...mother fucker! Die!” His eyes bulged, drool spilled, veins swelled, and teeth gnashed. They didn’t notice until it was too late. He ran them down in cold blood, rolling over each person multiple times. Their heads and bodies were flattened in a heaping bloody mess on the concrete.

At least, he did so in his mind. Of course, he knew better than to enact such twisted thoughts. Those thoughts gave way to the night his life fell apart. He still lived the moment in his mind, flashing back to that fateful day.

“I’m leaving you,” his blond ex-wife had told him.

“For what?” he asked. “We’re happy!”

“You are...not me.”

“What will people think of a divorced marriage therapist? My credibility will be shot!” he shouted.

“Pul-eeze! All those quacks are divorced. Secondly, that’s all you care about...you! Not about losing me, not about what drove me into the arms of another man. It’s no surprise your patients are bailing after one session.”

“That’s not true! I do care about you!”

“Then ask me why I left, Josh.
